Daily Word #15: What Are Modern Day Idols Christians Can Worship? Part 1: Idolatry
Do Christians really still have idols in their life? If so, what are they?
An idol according to dictionary.com, is a representation or symbol of an object of worship. Therefore, an idol is anything that man allows to get between him and God, and it is whatever he worships above Almighty God or instead of Almighty God. Idols can include things such as money, fame, shopping, sports, education, or even one's family. As human beings, tend to worship whatever we consider most important to us, and if that thing is not God, then we have made that become our idol.
Exodus 20:3-6 says,
“3 You must not have any other god but meYou shall have no other gods before me, 4 You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. 6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
We may not literally bow down to our checkbooks, but if we bow our hearts, we are making money or whatever else we may put in the highest regard, our idol although God should come first. In fact, if we seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, He promises to provide all we will ever need as seen in Matthew 6:33.
Money can easily compete with God because it provides our wants, gives us a sense security, it gives us "pleasures" but money can go as fast it may come.
